Stuttering is a complex neurodevelopmental condition that affects approximately 1% to 4% of adults worldwide. Despite being deeply impacted by voice AI technology, people who stutter are often overlooked in its design and implementation.
Even more concerning, AI speech recognition systems frequently misinterpret non-fluent speech patterns, treating them as "errors" to be interrupted, corrected, or even deleted. This exacerbates communication barriers, intensifies anxiety, and reinforces the marginalisation of individuals who stutter.
At the same time, language is inherently diverse. Beyond the 7,100 natural languages, the world is home to sign languages, constructed languages, programming languages, and symbolic communication systems each serving unique roles in human connection, technological progress, and cultural expression.
Through this interactive website, we seek to foster empathy and deeper emotional connections. By immersing users in the experience of stuttering, we encourage an organic and meaningful exchange of perspectives. Our goal is to raise awareness of systemic biases in AI speech recognition against people who stutter and other non-standard speech communities.
We advocate for fairer, more inclusive language technology—one that ensures every voice is heard and valued.
Ultimately, we warmly invite you to experience the unique beauty of stuttering as a language in its own right.
